Human, Culture,=20 Technology and Interreality

The Internet, the PC and = mobile=20 phones have made dramatic changes to society during the past = 25=20 years. One of the most significant changes is the way we = image=20 ourselves in an abstract cybernetic social world, where we=20 experience not only our imaginations but also those of other = people.=20 This 23-10-2006 seminar at KAIST Graduate School of Culture=20 Technology points the Human Behavior, Culture and Virtual = Identity=20 in that cyber world.

Men use tools to help themselves and each other. = Specific=20 tools, in case communication media, are used to contact each = other,=20 to remote communicate and to trade interactive.
There are = a lot=20 of people on earth, so there is a lot to talk and deal. = There is=20 also a lot of information to exchange.
Networks and = computers=20 support and replace information processes of both man and = machine,=20 without much ethical objection. Developers, technicians and=20 entrepreneurs do not ask themselves if something is = possible, but=20 how it can be made possible.
The concepted applications = are so=20 promising and can be so usefully incorporated into the daily = life of=20 people that cyberisation is unavoidable. On the one hand, = these=20 developments will require an improved form of management of = existing=20 networks, particularly with regard to the contact from = device to=20 device (M2M). Self-organising and disruptive networks are = being=20 realised which take over and combine the management of = regular,=20 wireless and ad hoc networks. On the other hand, an integral = worldwide standard will have to be developed for the = physically=20 connected networks enabling the physical networks to keep=20 communicating with the environment and be context aware = during a=20 business trip or on holiday. And this is only the beginning = of a=20 bio-revolution in the knowledge society. The real impact of=20 telecommunica-tions and ubiquitous networks will come not = from the=20 technology itself but from how people use it, resist it, = adapt to=20 it, and ultimately use it to transform themselves, their=20 communities, and their institutions.
Hardly any attention = is paid=20 to the transparent way in which these tools are used in and = between=20 the physical and virtual worlds, such as the emergence of = personal=20 parallel networks in both worlds and the resulting total = hybrid=20 experience. Although there are flaws and indistinctnesses in = the=20 so-called virtual world, new ways of making contact and new=20 communication channels have developed, such as SMS and IM. = These=20 (im)possibilities and the technical characteristics of a = modern=20 communication networks as the Internet enable people, in = combination=20 with wireless communication systems, to (anonymously) move = around in=20 a virtual society and thee by have changing identities,=20 relationships, transactions and habits. Thanks to = technologies as=20 the Internet and mobile telephony, there is innovation not = only in=20 the contact and channel, but also in unexpected and = unintentional=20 new ways of talking, lurking, communicating and other human = behavior=20 has developed.
This takes place in one-on-one = relationships as=20 well as inside and outside groups, although technology in = this area=20 does not match up the required functionality (behavior) of = group=20 communications. New forms of anonymity and dissociation = (assuming=20 multiple personalities) are cultivated in this virtual = society and=20 they lead to different behavioral patterns.

Human = beings are=20 social creatures, with own identities, but use objects and = spaces as=20 their individual purposes. Those humans, objects and places = in daily=20 life are not fixed but change continuously by various = factors. They=20 overlap each other. Human are also using space, in both = physical as=20 abstract way. In everyday life there are many physical = spaces such=20 as spaces of leisuring, playing, learning, dwelling, = working,=20 shopping, traveling, and resting. Between each situational = space,=20 there are connections (relationships), overlaps (common = use), and=20 changes. For instance: the relationships between a student, = books, a=20 computer and a classroom. At an abstract level there are = connections=20 like information and learning. Due to the broadband wire and = wireless networks (including the mobile and satellite = networks) we=20 will be able to use the resources of any space precisely and = quickly=20 whenever we will need. These ubiquitous technologies will = disable=20 the boundaries between these physical spaces. The = consequences are=20 that people experience the total of spaces as one ubiquitous = space.=20 Besides the ubiquitous reality exist also a kind of = virtuality, that=20 is always related to, and interacts with real, actual = phenomena.=20 This boundless and positionless experience becomes an = imagination of=20 mixed realities, even more abstract than a three-dimensional = view.
Do physical and virtual realities exist next to one = another? Or could it be that in the human mind an even more = abstract=20 total reality is developing in which both realities exist = both in=20 a
parallel simultaneous and integrated way? And if so, = can anyone=20 create this sensational integrated reality? Is it an = abstraction or=20 a kind of hybrid thinking? I call this the
phenomenon of=20 'interreality', a creation of a hybrid total image of and in = both=20 the physical and virtual = worlds.

Interreality

The=20 actual topic of my research is =A1=AEInterreality=A1=AF, = with all necessary=20 and desirable perspectives, in the context of the = architecture of a=20 cyber culture. Interreality is the hybrid total experience = of the=20 physical and virtual reality. My initially research started = very=20 basic and results in a quest into developments in society = that are=20 decisive for the place of new communication technologies, = into=20 questions and suppositions that have arisen along the way, = as well=20 as into research that is being conducted worldwide. When = observing=20 the behaviour and explicit experiences of Internet users, = you will=20 notice that the young in particular (<25 years) seem to=20 effortlessly switch between the physical and virtual = realities.=20 Through various (often non-converging) media they are = supplied with=20 information and contacts. They share address books, make=20 appointments and within seconds hop from one reality to the = other.=20 They actually do see a hybrid reality: the crocodile which = was first=20 sitting under the bed is yawning with boredom in Sesame = Street, only=20 to surface seconds later in Digital City foaming at the = mouth. In=20 the other window you have to find the hidden salt-water = crocodile in=20 the Zoo before you lock him up together with the lion before = you can=20 free the Allosaurus. If after finding him you quickly vote = for this=20 crocodile, you earn bonus points. Meanwhile you half and = half watch=20 a documentary on the Discovery Channel in which the = crocodile grabs=20 a wading aardvark and wolfs it down. A child's magical world = is no=20 longer an unstable world, but from the cradle the child = feels=20 physically and virtually its way towards the reason that = makes 'the=20 world' objective. It discovers that the crocodile can evoke = both=20 fear and affection; that real teeth look dangerous but that = you can=20 crawl through virtual teeth to take an exciting look in the=20 crocodile's stomach. Without delving too much into the = innermost=20 feelings it really seems as if in their minds an even more = abstract=20 total reality is created in which both realities integrate = into a=20 fused experience, interreality.

Interreality is the = base for=20 our ubiquitous experiences in both of physical and virtual=20 realities. We imagine we are on earth and also in cyber, and = so we=20 live in cyber world, and
have our human cyber behavior = closest=20 our practical human behavior. Emerging to an ubiquitous = space,=20 regular social behavior also will develop to hybrid behavior = in more=20 and
mixed realities, ultimately resulting in a total, = fused=20 experience: interreality.
